I first went to Benediktbeuern in the European summer of 1968. I had been asked by my Provincial to pursue Biblical Studies, and I knew that I would need German, as well as Greek and Hebrew. Otto Wahl made me enthusiastically welcomed, and was delighted that a young Salesian from Australia would be going to the Biblical Institute. I will never forget his support and enthusiasm over those months. A good start leads to a good ending! Now almost 81, I rejoice in the “good start” that Otto Wahl gave me. Over the years he followed my career and rejoiced in my achievements. Now he has brought to conclusion a wonderful contribution to the Church and the Congregation. I salute him for all that he has done and thank him for what he did for me. May he rest in peace.
May we all learn from the scientific seriousness and the profound Salesian and human commitment Otto Wahl shared with all who had the privilege to know him.
